Across the sea

Williamstown beach on a sunny day

Part soundscape, part sonic correspondence, Across the sea is an audio love letter between two communities of ocean swimmers — one in St Leonards-on-Sea, UK, the other in Williamstown, Australia.

Over three months, a group of swimmers from both sides of the world and in contrasting seasons, recorded voice notes capturing their regular ocean rituals: the slap of bouncy waves, the pull of strong currents, icy dawn plunges, glimpses of seahorses and dolphins. These recordings trace a shared rhythm of immersion - not only in the water, but in place, routine and kinship.

Premiered as part of the 2025 XMTR Audio Arts Festival, Across the sea is guided audio walk led by the artist.

With thanks to participants - the Jellyfish: Adrianna, Andrea, Reid, Sandy, Sarah, Wai Ying and the St Leonards Blue Tits: Anja, Carol, Helen, Ina, Kirsten, Lesley and Lizzie.

Additional thanks to Lucia Scazzocchio and Sophie Townsend.

In the ocean, the connection between heart and body is real and it can be strong enough to be carried across the world.
