Installation

Camilla is interested in the use of light and space in her gallery installation work. Her installations investigate the nature of the sonic experience and the perceptions of sound in space.

Selected works

Vacuum#1

with Eamon Sprod and featuring performances from Anthea Caddy, Ryan Cockburn, Matt Davis, Carl Priestley and Thembi Soddell. At West Space Gallery Melbourne July 2008

The premise behind Vacuum#1 was to investigate new ways of presenting sound installation and performance. Over 4 days, Eamon and myself performed continually for seven hours each day. Guest artists were invited to contribute over that period for shorter durations. Speakers were hung at various points throughout the gallery and different materials were miced to create new 'instruments' or sound sources. Sound was dispersed through in the gallery through various means of amplification and also via acoustic performance.

Dust My Broom

West Space Inc Melbourne Dec 2004

Multichannel sound and light

The broom closet was the place in my parents’ house where everything without a home went. Along with the brooms, mop and vacuum cleaner also lived old 78 records, jars of coins, broken tools, dusters made from my father’s underpants.

The broom closet was also the favourite place for hide and seek. It was dark cool and just a little spooky with those broken remnants of family history.Dust My Broom extends my investigations into the idea of a sonic memory and how sound triggers emotional response.

I built a false wall and cupboard within Gallery 3 of Westspace. It was painted a deep red both inside and out. There was a dim light inside the cupboard. Two vents were built near the floor of the false wall through which light was projected

The sound was a constructed multi channel work played back through 6 speakers built within the cupboard walls These are abstracted through digital processing  so that they are unrecognisable from their origin. Sounds of rattling coins, fabric rustling mixed with abstracted textures from miscellaneous source recordings

Light

Bus Gallery Melbourne Nov 2003

Multichannel Sound and Light

Within Gallery 3 at bus a cross axis of steel cable was suspended from the ceiling and anchored at each of the corners. From this I suspended 600 blue ‘icicle’ LED lights in varying lengths and positioning around the room. To move around the room the participant had to brush though lighting strands. These lights went on and off in random patterns. The room was pitch black except for these lights. The light strands were invisible in the dark without their luminance. The unpredictability of lighting was a crucial part of the installation experience. A person entered the space through a black curtain; small lights may light up directly in front of their face, unsettling them while they become used to the darkness.

The sound was a constructed multichannel piece for 6 speakers. Four speakers were suspended at just above head height and two speakers were placed at a corner of the room

The sound was processed location recordings taken from a steel foundry in Melbourne. Furnaces, arc welders various metal clangings moving around the space
